“Some young pianists like to dazzle us with their virtuosity. American pianist Jonathan Biss prefers an introspective approach. He always plays music from the highest of the high ground. He exudes an old-fashioned seriousness…”
The Daily Telegraph, November 2016

Jonathan Biss

Pianist Jonathan Biss’s approach to music is a holistic one. Through concerts, teaching, writing and commissioning, Biss’s deep musical curiosity means he fully immerses himself in projects close to his heart which have included Schumann: Under the Influence, a 30 concert initiative with a related Kindle publication A Pianist Under the Influence; and Late Style, looked at through solo and chamber music performances, masterclasses and a Kindle publication Coda.

This 360° approach reaches its zenith with Biss’s relationship with the music of Beethoven. In 2011, he embarked on a nine-year, nine-disc project to record the complete cycle of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Starting in September 2019, in the lead-up to the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in December 2020, he will perform all of Beethoven’s piano sonatas at the Wigmore Hall and celebrate the release of his boxset of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas.

Macbeth Media Relations first collaborated with Jonathan in 2011 with the release of the first CD in his Beethoven sonata cycle and the publication of Beethoven’s Shadow, the first Kindle eBook to be written by a classical musician. He has subsequently recorded eight of the nine volumes in the sonata cycle; initiated Exploring Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas, Coursera’s online course that has reached more than 60,000 subscribers; and launched Beethoven/5, a project that involved commissioning piano concertos as companion works for each of Beethoven’s five piano concertos.
